Holy Cross Abbey

A little more than a month before the community of Our Lady of the Valley moved into its new buildings at St. Joseph’s Abbey in 1950, thirty monks traveled to the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Virginia to establish Holy Cross Abbey on the western bank of the Shenandoah River.

The site is 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. Holy Cross Abbey is currently involved in a major sustainability project to preserve green space in the Shenandoah Valley.

The guest house at Holy Cross Abbey is available by reservation to men and women who wish to spend several days with us in quietness and prayer.

There are no conferences, nor is there a rigid schedule to follow, but a monk is available for spiritual direction and confession. Weekday retreats begin on Monday at 3 pm and end on Friday by 9:30 am. Weekend retreats are from Friday at 3 pm through Sunday at 3 pm.

Reservations may be made by letter or telephone. The opportunity for enjoying silence and solitude is a special part of your retreat.

Please share this with the monks by helping maintain the quiet of the surroundings and respecting the privacy of the monastic quarters.
